Why invest in a Business Intelligence or Performance Management system?

You want:

  • A quick way to extract your data and produce reports
  • An easy way to analyse your information and a quick way to change and test different scenarios

And you want a system that:

  • Is reliable and you can trust
  • A system that can bring together different databases and different structures
  • A system that doesn’t rely on IT for information

You can have all this with a Business Intelligence or Performance Management system and you will have the answers to:

  • Where are we now?
  • How did we get here?
  • Where are we going?
  • How will we get there?

What is Business Intelligence?

Business Intelligence (BI) is a broad category of applications and technologies for gathering, storing, analysing and providing access to data to help users make better business decisions. Some companies refer to their BI system as an MIS system, EIS system or Decision Support System. There is little difference between them.

BI applications include the activities of:

  • Query and reporting
  • Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and analysis
  • Dashboards and scorecards
  • Alerting

What is Corporate Performance Management?

Corporate Performance Management or Performance Management as it has become known is an umbrella term that describes all of the processes, methodologies, metrics and systems needed to measure and manage the performance of an organisation.

Many companies are moving towards the adoption of a Performance Management framework. These companies will use Performance Management to engage every employee and to direct company resources to achieve the strategic goal.

Business Intelligence is fundamental to the Performance Management framework. In addition, it requires planning and consolidation, integrated with the Business Intelligence system, to streamline budgeting, forecasting, re-forecasting and consolidation of all group entities.

How can a BI or CPM system help you?

When you have a BI or CPM system you can benefit in a number of ways:

  • Automatically loading data from the source systems into the Performance Management system
  • Making information available quickly, which is automatically distributed to users across the organisation and in the field to make it available when and where it is needed.
  • Representing information in many ways – on a dashboard, as traffic lights, in a table, on a graph, so that it is presented in the most suitable format for the intended audience.
  • Allowing for unexpected results so they can be easily analysed and understood with user-friendly reporting tools, which can allow measures to be taken to avert problems from escalating.
  • Giving control to users, if so desired, for their own reporting, so they have the ability to create reports when they need them reducing their dependency on others.
